    President/ Director of Leagues & Camps - Baseball

    Mark is a proud Littleton native and President of Slammers Baseball & Softball. Mark is former Major League left-handed pitcher who was drafted in the 4th round of the 1987 draft after graduating from J.K. Mullen High School. Mark played at Seminole Junior College in 1988 where he pitched in the Junior College World Series and earned 1st team All-American honors. Mark began his 15 year professional career with the California Angels in 1988 where he was both a starter and relief pitcher. In addition to the Angels he pitched in the major leagues for the Seattle Mariners, Oakland Athletics and Philadelphia Phillies as well as playing for the Yokahama Baystars in the Japanese Major Leagues in 2001. Mark played three seasons of winter ball in Venezuela and one season in Mexico. Upon retiring in 2002 Mark became co-owner of Slammers baseball & Softball. Mark’s passion is working with players of all ages to teach them the great game of baseball. Since joining the Slammers organization Mark has given more than 7000 private lessons. Mark has coached 6 year old teams, 12 year old teams and High School select teams. Marks’s 12 year old team won the USSSA majors State Championship in 2010 and he finished 5th with this team in Cooperstown. He has competed with the Slammers teams in National tournaments across the country. Mark is currently an associate Scout for the Boston Red Sox.

    Clint is a former Major league Right handed pitcher. Ten years professional pitching experience. Acquired by the Seattle Mariners in the 3rd round of the 1985 draft. Made major league debut against the Texas Rangers and Nolan Ryan in 1989. Pitched on the Greek National Team in the 2004 Olympics. Denver native and Mullen H.S. graduate, 1985.     Billy Played 4 years at the University of Texas at Arlington. Drafted in the 34th round by the New York Mets. Taken in the rule 5 draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1999. Sold to the Yakult Swallows of the Japanese Central league in 2003. Signed by the Washington Nationals for the 2005 season. 3 time minor league all-star with career .285 avg. and 94 home runs. Played 8 years professionally at 4 positions(1b,3b,lf,rf). A full time instructor at Slammers since 2005. Specializes in hitting, fielding and throwing at all levels and works with youth pitchers. Degree in kinesiology from the University of Texas at Arlington. Certified National Strength and Conditioning(NSCA)personal trainer. Currently enrolled in CU Denver's M.B.A. program.     Director of Coaching and Clinics - Baseball

    In the summer of 1971 Marc Johnson returned from Fort Hood, Texas where he served in the Army as Head coach of the 2nd armored division baseball team. He was then hired as the assistant varsity baseball coach at Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village, Colorado. One year later he took over the fledgling baseball program. His first year as the head coach the Bruins finished with a losing record. That was the first and last team he ever coached to a losing season. His record as a head coach at Cherry Creek high School is 631 wins and 147 losses. Coach Johnson has coached his teams to 25 league titles and 11 state title games. Coach Johnson has won seven state championships in baseball. Marc was also the head soccer coach at Cherry Creek from 1971-1997 where he won five state championships.

    Coach Johnson's summer Connie Mack teams have made appearances in the AABC World Series three times. In 1987-88 Coach Johnson was the assistant coach of the USA Junior National team that won silver and gold medals in international play. In 2004 coach Johnson was named as the head coach of the USA Junior National team that competed in Taiwan.

     

    Coach Johnson has coached over 300 young men that have gone on to play at the collegiate level, 75 of which have gone on to play at the professional level. Five of his former players are currently playing in the major leagues.

    Coach Johnson was named the Volunteer Summer Baseball coach of the year in 1988 by the United States Baseball Federation. In 1996 he was named High School coach of the year by the ABCA. In 1997 coach Johnson was named National Coach of the year by the American Amateur Baseball Congress. In 2000 Coach Johnson was named as one of the National Coaches of the decade by Baseball America. Coach Johnson has been named the coach of the year in Colorado seven times. In 2004 coach Johnson received the Colorado Rockies Pioneer Award in 2004. In 2007 coach Johnson was inducted into the Colorado High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame. In 2010 coach Johnson was inducted into the Colorado High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. That same year he was inducted into the prestigious Colorado Sports Hall of Fame whose membership includes professional and amateur athletes and coaches.

     

    Coach Johnson has been a guest speaker at many state conventions and two National ABCA conventions. In January 2011 Coach Johnson will be inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame at their national convention in Nashville TN.

     

    To say that Coach Johnson is a Colorado coaching legend is an understatement. His knowledge of the game and coaching style has touched many young lives and he continues to teach young players and coaches today.

     

    Coach Johnson is currently a scout for the Colorado Rockies and has scouted professionally for over 25 years and for the past nine years has been the executive director of The Yard and Marc Johnsons Sports Center, baseball and softball academy.

     

    Marc Johnson has been married to his wife Peggy for forty years. They have two adult children, Kerry and Tyler as well as four wonderful grandchildren.

Pitched professionally for the Kansas City Royals.  Green Mountain High School varsity pitching coach 2003 to 2006. Bear Creek High School varsity Pitching Coach, 2006 -2008. Current Associate Scout for the Kansas City Royals. Has coached Slammers Junior Olympic team, Slammers Select Fall Travel Team,  Slammers State Tournament Connie Mack team. Current Director and Head Coach of the Slammers Collegiate Team summer program. Specializes in pitching and hitting instruction.     Daven is a Colorado native, graduating from Cortez High School and earning his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Co. He played four years of varsity basketball and baseball at Mesa before signing a professional baseball contract in 1986 with the Houston Astros. Daven left Mesa State as the 2nd leading scorer in Mesa basketball history. Was a three-time all RMAC basketball player and a two-time all conference baseball player.

    After a successful professional career with the Houston Astros, New York Yankees, and Seattle Mariner organizations, Daven co-founded The Yard Baseball and Softball academy in Denver with Mariner teammate, Clint Zavaras. What was started in a small strip center in SE Denver, eventually became a state of the art, 24,000 sf. Baseball specific training center and the model for the rest of the country. The Yard is now Slammers South.  Daven was an assistant coach at Metro State College of Denver.  Before accepting the Metro position, he was the head coach of Front Range Christian High School for 6 years.  He was an associate scout for the Colorado Rockies for over 12 years.

    Currently, Daven is the head softball coach at Colorado Christian University in Lakewood.  Before accepting the position at CCU, he took a competitive team, the Colorado Stampede to a National fastpitch title.

     Since 1993, Daven has given over 20,000, private baseball and softball lessons, conducted over 40 camps and 150 clinics across the country. With the success of the Scout Team, The Yard has seen over 400 players go on to play college baseball and numerous players sign professional contracts.

    Daven resides in Lakewood with his wife, Tawna and daughter, Megan, who is attending Colorado State University.

The Yard and Slammers have been a huge part of my life and I'm proud of what has been accomplished. To see a young player develop his or her skills is priceless.     Welcome back major league veteran Lee Stevens. Lee was The 22nd player drafted in the first round by the California Angels in 1986. A graduate of Lawrence High school (ks) Lee went on to play 17 years of professional baseball as a first baseman and outfielder. he finished his career playing in over 1000 major league games with the Angels, Texas Rangers, Montreal Expos, And Cleveland Indians. He also played two years in Japan with the Kintetsu Buffaloes. More recently was the varsity hitting coach for Highlands Ranch High school from 2008-20010.He is available for hitting instruction.

    Yvette Pitched for the University of North Carolina from 1990-1994. She had the nations top 25 lowest era from 1993 to 1994. Yvette played in professional softball in 1998.     Denny is a former Major League pitcher with the Colorado Rockies and Seattle Mariners.He was drafted by Seattle in the 4th round of the 1996 draft.Denny made his Major League debut as a member of the Mariners in 1999.In 2001 he earned pitcher of the year honors for the Pacific Coast League(AAA) while splitting time between Seattle and Triple A.Denny was traded to the Rockies 2002 and remained with Colorado through 2005.Stark's best year was in 2002 in which he went 11-4 with 4.00 ERA. for the Rockies.Prior to the start of the 2010 season Denny was named to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox all decade team.

    Originally from Laramie Wyoming, played baseball at Yavapai College in Prescott Arizona for two years. Sophomore year lead the team in E.R.A with a 0.529. After Yavapai continued to play at Metro State College, was first team all tournament team junior year, and was an all conference selection his senior year as a pitcher. Junior graduated from Metro State in 2008 with a degree in Sports Industry and Operations and a minor in marketing. Signed and played for the Harlingen White Wings of the United Baseball League.     Attended Cherry Creek High School, where he was 1 of 4 players ever to play Varsity baseball all 4 years.  Danny was selected as a freshmen to compete for Team USA 17U to play in Italy against other countries top teams. Danny was also the starting CF for the Colorado Top 40 team. After High School Danny turned down the Detroit Tigers and decided to sign at South Mountain CC in Phoenix and also Long Beach State in California.  Before leaving his Father was diognoised with cancer. Instead of pursuing baseball he decided to stay by his Father's side.  Danny has taught players from as early as 5 years old all the way up to Professional players.  He teaches hitting, pitching, and fielding.  He was also the head coach of an high school all star fall team this past year.     Brian is a former Major League pitcher with the Milwaukee Brewers. He also pitched in the Japanese Major League World Series for the Seibu Lions in 1997!  Brian played professionally for 15 years, including one minor league season with the Birmingham Barons and “Michael Jordan”. Brian was a six time all-star and voted Minor League Player of the year for the New York Mets in 1985.  Brian's career was injury plagued as he went under the knife 5 times on his elbow and 4 times for his shoulder. He was the true ironman that would not give up on his dream to become a Major League Pitcher.

     A Colorado native, Brian graduated from Overland high school in 1983. He was drafted in the 10th round by the New York Mets in 1984 while attending Trinidad State JC.  Brian has been a professional pitching, hitting, and conditioning coach for over twenty years! Brian is also a coach with the Slammers summer and fall programs

     Brian likes to Golf, Hike, and Travel in his spare time. He once swam from Alcatraz to San Francisco…..and back!  His next goal in life is to qualify and compete in the “Ironman Triathlon”.  His prized possession is his Bearskin rug.  “It’s not dead” Brian resides in Castle Rock with his wife Carol, son Bryce and daughter Bailee.

    Bret Williamson

    Bret Williamson is recognized as one of the best hitting instructors in the country and an outstanding teacher of the game. What comes through in all his instruction is his passion for baseball and his ability to markedly improve his students, both mentally and physically. Over his many years in baseball he has worked as a hitter with baseball greats Pete Rose, Ted Kluzuski, and Dan Whitiller; currently the Colorado Collegiate Baseball League hitting instructor, coached the Colorado Youth National Team, the Colorado Rockies Scout Team, the Colorado Select Team in the Senior Phoenix Fall Classic; and was the head coach of the Colorado Rockies collegiate summer team. He also served as the hitting/outfield coach for Metro State College, where his hitters were ranked in the top 50 nationally in most offensive categories. As a college player, he was a Two-Time All-America at Mesa State College, where he was one of the leading hitters in the country, and later played professionally for the Cincinnati Reds.     Steve is a Graduate of Cherry Creek HS. Steve played both Baseball and Basketball at Creek.  After High School Steve played both sports for two years at Lamar JC. and then Southwestern Oklahoma State. After Graduation with a BA in Education Steve went into coaching and Teachiing.  Going into his 25th year of coaching Steve has coached at all levels of amature Baseball.  He got his start back at Lamar JC were he was the Head Baseball and Basketball coach as well as Athletic Dir. for Three years. Then it was on to Kansas State were helped with Pitching and ran the JV program. After 4 years at KSU. Steve moved to Florida were he coached and taught at Chieflan HS and Cedar Key HS. Steve returned to Colorado to be the Head Coach at Boulder HS  for three years and then it was all the way back to Cherry Creek were Steve Coached the Soph and Legion team's and Connie Mack. Steve also spent time in Atlanta GA. Coaching.  Steve is currently the Varsity Pitching Coach at Cherry Creek and Connie Mack pitching Coach for Head Coach Marc Johnson.     Luke is the owner/operator of Mile High Training Inc.  He is currently one of a few Head Baseball Coaches that is also a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist by the National Strength & Conditioning Association.  He received his B.S from Nicholls State University in Thibodaux , Louisiana where he played baseball at the Division I level.  He also received his A. S degree from Butler County Community College in El Dorado , Kansas .  He was  Region VI All American while at Butler and a 1st Team All Jayhawk 3rd baseman. He was also an All Southland Conference selection his junior and senior years.   Luke is currently the Head Varsity Coach at Arapahoe High School , where he also played and graduated in 1998. He was an All-State selection as a sophomore, junior and senior and in 1998 he was The Colorado Player of the Year and a draft choice of the Minnesota Twins.  In 2008 he was the Denver Post Coach of the Year.  In just 5 years as the Head Coach of Arapahoe High School, 22 of his players have gone on to play in College. As a strength & conditioning coach he has worked with hundreds of athletes from the age of 6 up to the professional level.  Several of his athletes have gone on to college and received athletic scholarships and those athletes are playing baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse.  Several of his athletes have attained All State and All League honors as well.  Luke's main objective is to make each athlete more athletic and confident in their abilities no matter what their age or skill level is.  It is never too young to train!!     Originally from Montrose Colorado, moved to Denver to play Baseball at Metropolitian State College of Denver on a full ride scholarship as a catcher. Was a four year starter for metro as an outfielder. Finished up his career with many accolades such as 3-time all-conference outfielder, 2-time all-region outfielder, and a member of the 2008 Division 2 Rawlings All-American team. Jake lead the nation in RBIs his senior year with 89. Finished his carrer with an overall BA. of .373 drove in 207 RBIs and hit 30 homeruns.     Derek was born in raised in Lakewood Colorado.Derek graduated from Bear Creek High School in 2003 were he was a three time all conference selection in baseball. Derek continued to play baseball at Lamar Community College for two years were he was an all region selection as a pitcher his sophomore year. After Lamar Derek continued to play baseball at Metro State College and was a all conference selection his senior year as a pitcher. Derek graduated from Metro State in 2008 with a degree in Sports Industry and Operations and a minor in marketing.

    Nate is a 1994 graduate of Heritage H.S. Nate was signed as a non drafted free agent in1998 and made his Major League debut in April 2002.Nate logged 6 years of Major League service with the Kansas City Royals, Colorado Rockies, and Florida Marlins. Nate attended Barton Co. C.C. and was selected to the 1st team All-Jayhawk League.Nate transferred to Fort Hays State Univ. where he was selected to the 1st team All-RMAC team as a pitcher as a Jr.He was named RMAC pitcher of the year as well as selected 1st team Div.II All-American as a senior.Nate was the first Denver born player to record a win as a member of the Rockies and accomplshed it in his Coors Field debut in September of 2006.

    Jessica is the assistant softball coach at Colorado Christian University and specializes in individual hitting and fielding instruction.  Stephens has experience in teaching the fundamental skills of softball overseas as well as many camps and clinics in the US.  Stephens, a Georgia native, played softball and basketball at Piedmont College and earned her degree in Athletic Training from North Georgia College & State University.  Prior to CCU, Stephens earned her Master’s of Education in Sports and Recreation Management from Hardin-Simmons University and has coached at Georgia Southern University and Upper Iowa University.     

    Stephens’ collegiate coaching experience, enthusiasm and encouraging approach to young players gives each individual both the mental and physical tools to develop good habits at a young age.

    Jim Attended Grand Canyon University winning a NAIA Chapionship in 1986. Signed free agent contract with the Philadelphia Philles in 1987. Played professionally from 1987-1993. Currently owns his own business which allows him the opportunity to coach in the Slammers Fall and Summer Leagues.

    1983- Graduated from Boulder City High School (outside of Las Vegas), 1982 state champions.
    1984-1986- Attended Grand Canyon University on full ride baseball scholarship. 1986 NAIA national champions.  Signed with the Philadelphia Phillies.
     
    1987- Played in the Northwest League (Bend Phillies) primarily as first baseman.
    1988- Signed by Joe Maddon of the California Angels and was assigned to California League, and finished the season with the Quad City Angels.
     
    1989- Played the entire season with the Quad Cities Angels primarily as the third baseman. Best year professionally and led the team in RBI's, hits, and average.
    Played Winter Ball in Obregon, Mexico primarily as a first baseman.
    1990- Started the year with the Midland Angels (AA) and spent the last half of the season with the Palm Springs Angels.  Between AA and A ball hit over .300 and over 80 RBI's.
     
    1991- Opted to go overseas and play in Major League Taiwan. Led the league in RBI's, hits, and third in average(.305). 
     
    1992- Second year in Taiwan, two time All-star and opted to come back to United States.
     
    1993- declined triple A contracts with Angels, Brewers, and A's and opted to play in Mexico for Villahermoso.
     
    1994-1995- Assistant coach for Reno Knights American Legion team.  Hitting and infield instructor.
     
    1996 to present- taught mainly hitting lessons to mainly high school players but also have helped current professional players in the lower minors.

    Mike attended College of Southern Idaho in 1980 – 1982 was chosen to the Junior College All-America team in 1981. Playing for renowned head coach and hitting instructor Jim “Skip” Walker. Additionally, Mike was a two year starter: first baseman and Catcher at the University of Northern Colorado 1983-1984 playing for Tom Petroff and Bus Campbell. Mike attended Skyline High School in Salt Lake City, Utah and started as an outfielder for 3 years 1977 – 1980. For the past 7 years, Mike has been coaching in the Cherry Creek Connie Mack program with Colorado Hall of Fame coach Marc Johnson. Mike has coached baseball for the past 23 years specializing in hitting instruction and all aspects of infield and outfield player instruction. Mike has worked to develop players of all ages and ability levels, from youth players up to professional players. Mike offers an instructional environment which is positive and successful and fosters a results oriented style.

    Played at Arvada West high school under my dad, Jim Capra, three years on varsity. Received one year of honorable mention All-Conference for catching and second team All-Conference pitching.  Also received four Academic-All Conference and four Academic All-State honors while playing.  Is currently a junior at Regis University and has played two years on the baseball team.  Has coached the Arvada West B-Team twice and assisted in the A-Team for one summer.

    Graduated high school from 6A power Owasso, in Oklahoma winning the 6A state championship his senior year finishing 6th in the nation. Owasso High School has been to the 6A state championship 12 of the last 13 years including all 4 of Turk's career, winning 3. Went on to play at Oral Roberts University where team received first ever preseason top 25 ranking, has captured the last 12 summit league titles, and has been the 4th winningest program in the nation since 2004. Finished career at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Played in the NBC world series three years being player of the series for his team in '08, also played winter ball in Arizona in 2009. Helped coach Slammers fall select team in 2008 as well as working hitting clinics at Slammers. Currently a hitting coach at Ponderosa High School.     Shane Fugita is a Colorado native and played baseball for the Colorado University Club Baseball team. He has his undergraduate degree and MBA, and is the President and CEO of the National Adult Baseball Association.  Shane coached youth baseball in South Jefferson County and Highlands Ranch for 16 years, and was coach for the Dakota Ridge High School 8th grade feeder program for two years.  Shane helped form and is President of the Dakota Ridge Baseball Association, and formed and coordinates the 8th grade feeder baseball program for Dakota Ridge High School.  Shane currently helps coach for the Dakota Ridge High School baseball program.     Valerio is a Colorado native who graduated from Bear Creek High School in 1985. He has coached youth baseball in south Jefferson County for 10 years, the past seven at the 0 League level. He also coached the Dakota Ridge feeder team the past two summers and is a junior varsity assistant for the Eagles. Valerio also helped form the Dakota Ridge Baseball Association.     John Quarton attended Metro State University from 1981-82 and then The University of Northern Colorado from 1983-85 where he played middle infield. He then went on to coach at Mullen High School from 1988-1998 and was Head coach from 1995-1998. He was the Head coach at Heritage High School 2002 to 2005. He has four final four appearances in the Colorado State 5A Baseball Championships. He coached in the state 5A championship in 2004. He currently coaches the Slammers Grey Connie Mack summer team as well as coaches the Slammers Fall Advanced teams.

    Katie Bender

    Softball - Softball

    Katie is in her fourth season as a private instructor specializing in individual hitting, slapping, catching and fielding as well as team and group instruction.  Katie also works with college bound athletes in the recruiting process to maximize exposure and utilize online recruiting tools and skills videos.  Bender also has experience teaching coaching clinics and offers private coaching instruction as well.  She uses current techniques, unique drills and effective language to elicit quick and positive results from girls of all ages and skill levels.

    Bender played collegiate ball at the University of Tampa, where she closed out her career as the season leader in home runs, doubles, RBIs, hits and total bases.  She also posted a .504 career slugging percentage during her playing career with the Spartans.  Bender earned all-Sunshine State Conference honors during her time at Tampa, and she was president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.  

    Bender, a native of Kansas City, Mo., graduated from the University of Tampa in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in psychology and a minor in sociology.  Most recently, Bender graduated with her Masters of Social Work from the University of Missouri-Kansas City where she was also the Graduate Assistant for their Division 1 softball team.  Bender's experience and education lend her to be one of the top instructors in the area teaching both physical and mental aspects of the game.
